The third batch, under the mentorship of Textile and Fashion Federation (Singapore)’s Vice President David Wang, as well as industry experts such as Nic Wong and Daniel Yam over the last seven months. 18 new labels that have been developed under Singapore’s fashion incubator project, PARCO next NEXT, alongside the Spring/Summer 2012 collections of five existing PARCO next NEXT designers.

The 18 new labels are 20:TWOTHREE, 2HB, alexandria chen, ANGELIA, ash, Episene, evenodd, FOON FOONO, FOREWORD, Kae Hana, LION EARL, MASH-UP, Mils, QUAINTHOOD, RÊVASSEUR, Saloni Rathor, Wil.LiaM Atelier and WSDM. Five of the designers from PARCO next NEXT’s second cohort - Arty.Lily, ffayth, eve, Veira and @dress of thoughts - are now entering their second year with the programme.

Another promising Singapore label, self-taught designer, Samuel Wong who is a strong believer of the co-existence of the polar opposites has brought out a collection that has a relevance to the new style that is not only wearable to many but also bringing out the varying men’s styles in the world of men’s fashion. The ever-intricate details from the seams that can be seen clearly is a sign that the product invented was brought out from his careful and imaginative thoughts. Most of his clothes can be seen as loud or many would say over the top, however he manages to harness his thoughts in making the future in fashion being represented in a tame manner. To those who loves to tame sophistication, this collection by Samuel Wong could be the one for you.

This young and innovative designer took a leap and dived into having a collection that showcases his imagination on having men wearing clothes that are not just bold but still carrying the essence on a gentleman. Inspired by architecture and symmetry, he crafted a collection with a view of having an A-symmetry design in most of his shirts. Other then the exclusive pieces made available, he continues to injects new styles throughout the season and even having his own collection displayed in the upcoming Merc-Benz fashion week in Sydney. His collection is worth to watch out for as he carry around his take on fashion to the international scene.

Their 12-piece “totemania” collection was heavily inspired by North west coast Native American culture. This collection of theirs may seem avant-garde, however with the growing fashion and style sense around the world, these daring designers realizes that the Singapore fashion scene need to be exposed to a style whereby in fashion you do not always need to be safe and boring. Their interesting, innovative DIY-stuffs that allows for custom orders and finishing uses simple materials such as plastic chains and tin cans. I must say that their collection is worth checking out for those who appreciate fashion in a less conventional way.

Former air stewardess managed to get her inspiration to start her own collection while on air. Joy produces a collection which concentrates on drape silhouettes and define cuts which evidently showcase her vision of flight.

Ricks’ collection inspiration transpired from film director and actor, Woody Ellen. His focus on oxford clothes clearly displays his passion on classics, based on the trends in the 70s. His view of making his collection neat and simple, clearly shows ‘less is more’ and showcase his craftsmanship by having simple yet hidden designs. Sartorial men who wish to carry a neat and gentlemanly look yet still impress should check out his current collection.

Two young designers who already had their collection staged around a story had finally made it into a reality despite their long planning stage that started back in their poly days and throughout their National Service. The collection was completely based on a story whereby they had imagined a lady from a forest that was forced to moved out due to deforestation and came into the city. Though fabric manipulation they managed to create a mood of fluid and soft throughout their collection. They inspiration usually comes from two disciplines that mainly includes architecture and one other discipline. Despite having a different point of inspiration, we should pay attention to their future collection to know whether they will grow their collection with a continuation of that lady in the a possible city.

Inspired by the visually impaired, these two young designers work on a collection that plays around with just one, black. The collection is deem as an innovative and fun that enables the one wearing to decide on how they wishes to wear it as the styles of the clothes are mostly versatile, thus proving that fashion is a playground. This collection does touches on the root of fashion as despite it being fun, inspirations do comes about from societal issues such as blindness.

Gregory DelliCarpini Jr. love affair with fashion started at a young age. Graduate of Skidmore College, trained in art history, art, and design and having studied architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, he has always enjoyed creative industries that directly and indirectly influence style.

Assisting at Vogue, his determination and hard work finally paid off when offered to heads up the fashion direction of Billboard.com writing a column titled, The Hook.

Z!nk Magazine has recently named Gregory DelliCarpini Jr., the new Fashion Editor of the Magazine in a continued effort to transform and garnish the Magazines image. Zink is moving forward with a new vision and plans to freshly blossom with a new fashion, artistic, and musical vision for the New Year with Gregory composing fresh material for the magazine.

R.A: What’s a regular day at work like as a Fashion Editor?

Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.: Regular, that’s an interesting word isn’t it. Well, to be completely honest, there really isn’t anything regular about my days. The best way to describe my life, I would say, would be a somewhat contained, yet chaotic, twister. By day I spend a bunch of time reading magazines from all over the world and searching for new talent to spotlight. Then when the sun goes down, there’s alway some fun and funky event to cover.

R.A: How has music impact the world of fashion in recent years?

Gregory: Music has so strongly impacted the fashion world. From Gaga premiering Bad Romance at Alexander McQueen’s runway show to Lana del Rey performing at Mulberry’s Spring/Summer 2012 presentation, fashion and music has become woven together on the same artistic quilt.

R.A: Top on your favourites list for S/S 12 runway music.

Gregory:

R.A: Your most memorable experience/interview with a celebrity being with The Hook.

Gregory: I loved chatting with V V Brown. She is an amazingly sweet person and so talented. I also had a great time talking to will.i.am at his VIP room in Pacha. He kept me laughing the entire interview and is a genuinely great guy.

R.A: Last year, you came out with the “Top 10 song we want on the runway”. Any updates to the list till date?

Gregory: I am currently working on another top sounds to hear on the runway for Fall/ Winter 2013 fashion week. It will release on The Hook in early February. I’m super excited about this one, there will be some great tracks featured! Stay tuned!

R.A: The most “fashionable” music videos.

Gregory: I am currently in love with Lana del Rey’s Video Game video. There’s a beauty, I think, in this idea in decaying grace that Lana captures so stunningly in the video.

R.A: Which artist/musician would you love to conduct an interview with and why?

Gregory: I would love to speak with Madonna. I have admired her since I was a small boy and love her unafraid attitude and fearless style.

R.A: Form 2 words best describing yourself with the initials R & A.

Masculinity and Femininity goes head on collision to have all imposed and supposed views excluded as both sexes may or can wear his designare title.

Runway Addict(R.A): Greetings Rad, what brought this idea of strongly to imbue your collection where both sexes can wear your designs?

Rad Hourani:I don’t see why do we need to divide things by gender, seasons, rules, religion, race, nationality, age etc ? I think that as a society, we’ve been extremely programmed. Even the most advanced societies are very limited in the way they define themselves. The way I do things without gender or season, it applies to everything in life. It’s about defying those limitations that are so often self imposed.

R.A: Would there be any long time inspiration that resulted what you have brought to the world?

Rad Hourani: I’m inspired by the idea of creating something that can’t be defined by a limited category. Things that have no reference from the past. I believe the only way you can attend to this kind of inspiration, is by observing everything around you.

R.A: Tell us about the men’s heels.

Rad Hourani: I’ve always looked for the perfect Unisex heel and I never found it before as everywhere I looked, it was girly, gothic, 70’s, etc, and that’s why I designed mine, it has the perfect shape that I was looking for, a timeless unisex shape.

R.A: What’s the story behind your scent, Ascent?

Rad Hourani: All the scents that reminded me of my childhood has been mixed to create one scent that can transformed into a story that represent the way i feel today : Baby powder for birth, rose for love, leather for sex, musk for hope, incense for death. It’s always great to observe the past and move forward. Life timeless unisex scents is the story of ASCENT.

R.A: What sort of individual you see wearing your designs?

Rad Hourani: A Rad Hourani person is someone who does not follow a trend, people who feel ageless all the time, and looks comfortable when they move, think, talk and dress and of cours open minded. I am most intreseted in designing for people that can see themselves similarly to the way i do.

R.A: What are your constant reflections and ethics that you’ve hold on to this moment?

Rad Hourani: Unisex, timeless, symmetric, straight, black, slick, geometric & transformable shapes.

R.A: What does fashion mean to you?

Rad Hourani: Fashion was never my goal, i always enjoyed esthetics in general.I don’t know if i need to call myself a designer or artist or to be the “IT” thing today and nothing tomorrow. I just like a certain aesthetic that reflects myself and the way i see the world. Beauty is everywhere, yet perfection is nowhere. I’m a perfectionist and I think that fashion makes me feel that perfection can maybe one day exist. So fashion are full of illusions…

R.A: If you have the last ball of Gossamer thread in the world, what would you make out of it?

Rad Hourani: bed sheets.

Press Conference for Women’s Fashion Week, 8th September 2011 –

‘’We need to escalate from where we are!’’ said Frank Cintamani, Chairman for Women’s Fashion Week. After a successful run of 40,000 attendees for Men’s Fashion Week (MFW) earlier this year, Frank and team announced to the ears and pens of the press that Haute Couture will be lavishly brought into meaning from 26th of October to the 30th of October next month.

What excites me was that Haute Couture is a member to only, probably, 200-300 in this almost reaching 7 billion people in the world. I’m talking about the one art of the art that perfectly attach the finest of gossamer balls, stitched and tailored on the skin with added perfection.

Haute Couture backdates from the 18th century and is actually an Art not many of us see, because I am who I am, I choose to decipher that Haute Couture is back to basics besides the traditional clothes and of cavemen rags, but that is just me. I just choose to believe that. Thank you. (*Flips Hair)

In attendance, were two Couturiers Gustavo Lin and Stephane Rolland who have worked with private clients and the royals. They will showcase their finest creations along with other 7 couturiers on the very week, first time in Asia and Marina Bay Sands is the title sponsor. With this major event, Singapore will be joining the true member of the Fashion Community aide and alongside London and Paris.

Gustavo Lins never went to fashion school but he holds an Architecture standard before in pursue of his rather discreet dreams of being a Couturier. He says ’’Importance of technique’’ and Haute Couture involves ‘’Rational activity where centimeter per centimeter is important’’, Just like architecture.

Do you know… Haute couture is protected by Law and is defined by the Chambre de Commerce et d’industrie de Paris based in Paris, France. Their rules state that only ‘’those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves’’ of the label Haute Couture. It was established in 1945 and updated in 1992. This is when the fact of art in Haute comes in to you, artistry at the highest level, timeless creation and craftsmanship, Opulence yet understated (the members at least).

I caught myself saying ‘’ooh la la’’ when Stephane Rolland’s brought out his glamour of handiworks on models. All I was thinking about in my head…‘’Dress me up’’ I would not mind at all trying my feminine side in clothes so demure, understated yet with sight, touch and soul working together in divination to create the word ‘’Wow..’’ in a whisper. Sigh….

The best part of the Press Conference was the Q&A with the Press. Claws were out (in a good way, however)

Question: Why Haute Couture in Singapore?

Frank Cintamani: ‘’Why not? It’s relevant anywhere in Europe. If we are serious to maintaining Singapore’s top ten list in the words, we need to be a complete season. We can’t be a one off fashion event, it needs to be a complete season or it’ll be laughable.’’

Question: Do you see that with this following event, a lot of people in Singapore ,be known by Haute? Maybe, the Japanese could be specify as so in Asia but nowhere else. Singaporeans are known to dress singularly badly!

Frank: I need to dispel this nonsense, I’m Sorry. I don’t think Japanese runs Haute Couture. It is like asking Gilliano. Look around in this Press Room. And I’ll be the first Non-Singaporean to raise the flag high! Why so many Singaporeans beating themselves up when their countries is glorious and wonderful, I do not understand.

Question: How many Haute Couture clients are there in Singapore?

Frank: I can’t divulge. It’s not fair. It’s a private affair. However, the paradigm shift from Europe has arrived in Asia not only just our shore. People now have more desire to engage in various art forms of cultural issues. We are also flying groups of women regionally as buyers to be in the show.

Question: How will this event reach out to heartlanders in Singapore and would only this show reach out to the one millionaires in the Singapore?

Frank: 40 thousand came through my door during men’s fashion week for free, Thank you very much! We take not a single dollar and all is self-funded out of passion. To allow this verified form, Haute Couture to survive, we are to serve heartlanders too. Stephane and Gustavo are not paid and they are paying me in fact by doing this and also to allow this verified form to survive! We reach out to the masses through the joys by presenting this itself. It should be enjoyed beyond by the heartlanders that’s why it’s here.

Question: Will the tickets be available to everyone?

Frank: …………….No.

Question to Stephane Rolland: By your designs, do you use models for your own fantasy rather than the average human being? Do you look at women as curves or pretty or nice? I can’t wear Haute Couture, for an average woman like me!

Stephane: I design for every woman, any size! (He continued telling a story of a plus size lady he made clothes for, she later made Stephane’s name as she was a princess in a part of U.A.E). I support women and the best, no age, no physics, I’m just here for women, in general.

Question to Gustavo Lins: How do you design clothes for women when you studied architecture?

Gustavo: My work Is different from Stephane’s. I don’t think about anyone when I design, I must adapt to people. Architecture is about structures and history and space. Fashion to me is spiritual and a philosophy. My work goes from architecture is a beginning of my personal history that’s why I move from architecture to Haute Couture.

Frank last words on the Conference: I encourage you to further find out more about Haute Couture and understand what we now roughly understand. It took me 2 months of sheer ignorance. It’s not about being an elitist, but taking a route of culture and the arts. This is not a selling thing. It’s us sharing an art form that is Haute Couture. This is an age of evolution and brought to you by The Shoppes at Marina Bay sands.

R.A Exclusive Interview: Kim Choong-Wilkins, Fashion Designer

There was definitely a huge media buzz going on, even before the public get to set eyes on his collection. Gracing the inaugural MFW 2011, Singapore, it was only more then appropriate for Fashion designer, Kim Wilkins to showcase his debut collection: BODYBOUND. Graduating from the Royal College of Arts, Kim has been exposed to the crazy world of fashion growing up in a family involved in the trade. Spending many years in

perfecting his designs, the results were evident in his end product. Inspired by the macabre photography of Joel-Peter Witkin, the collection screamed Avant Garde, Erotic and Gothic. R.A speaks to Kim, on his recent success and digs into his journey on becoming where he is right now as a fashion designer…. …

R.A: Hey Kim, your hard work sure paid off with your recent debut at MFW. What were your emotions like during that period of time?

Kim: They were a mixture of excitement, trepidation and hysteria. I think it’s always like that before a show: hardly anyone has slept and there is such a huge amount of effort and skill invested into each garment that everyone wants the result to be perfect… it all felt very “focused!” The team at Daniel Boey Productions really helped hold it all together.

R.A: How did having photographer Joel-Peter Witkin as your inspiration for Bodybound came about?

Kim: I can’t remember the first time I saw his photographs, I think it might have been while I was interning at McQueen, many moons ago, and I came across his work while researching for them. I have always found his work mesmerising. They are both seductive and unsettling; they sort of reel you in and kick you in the gut, at the same time.

R.A: Hoped you like the shots by our fashion photographer Fadli Rahman =)

Kim: I’m a great fan of Fadli through and through. I was talking to the boys from KTZ earlier in London and we all agreed that we will be watching his future progression with great interest.

R.A: What are you currently working on right now?

Kim: I am preparing a studded t-shirt… I don’t want to give too much away, but think golfer meets muscled jock.

R.A: Is there going to be a signature style we will see in future collections?

Kim: It might be too soon to say, everything changes, and you evolve with your work continuously. I’d like to think that my collections will retain their spunkiness throughout my career. Its quite important to me that Fashion exists to challenge the status quo: nothing is sacred, no one is safe. For me “Fashion” is a medium to rally against mediocrity in the world.

R.A: From McQueen to Zegna to Matthew Williamson, what have you gain through the experience?

Kim: That great ideas come into reality through sweat, spit and sleepless nights.

R.A: Which designers, do you look up to?

Kim: Thierry Mugler, Elsa Schiaparelli, Mason Jung

R.A: Do you think the fashion industry is affected by the downward spiraling economy? How would you as a designer fight it?

Kim: This is an interesting/ frightening period. I think that a good outcome of the current economic crisis is that a lot of “fluf” in the industry has been cast off. Big brand corporations have been hit the hardest, mainly as a result of complacent attitude towards their audience’s growing demands for more design for their dollar. They can no longer get away with filling the shelves with un-designed tat. The fashion savvy public are design educated… they “get” conceptual designers like Margiela and Chalayan, they savour the drama and choreography that goes into a McQueen show, and the couture like work that is involved in creating quality garments.

It has meant that the industry has had to mature quickly to catch up with it’s audience, who are braver and more sophisticated than they have ever been.

Speaking as one of a number of new designers, born out of the recession, we can adapt much faster, and have a far more contemporary attitude towards our craft and our customers.

R.A: Create a word out of ‘’R’’ & ‘’A’’ in relation to either yourself or anything in particular.

Launching his label in 2008, Dominican designer, Jose Duran is no stranger to the fashion industry. Molding inspiration from historical moments, challenging the forces between fluidity and structure, creating Avante-Garde yet wearable designs, Duran creates a signature evident in every collection.

Recently featured at Blueprint 2011(Singapore) and returning back to showcase his F/W 2011 collection at New York Fashion Week. Duran takes time off for our exclusive interview with never before seen, behind the scene shoots… …

R.A: We are such huge fans of your work that we don’t have the words for it. How would you describe your designs and inspiration from season to season? Cause I want to wear them all!

Jose Duran: I’m glad you like my designs. When it comes to my view in fashion, I get inspired by “non-beautiful” things, by homeless people, how they drape and put things together. Even by war, suffering of communities and historical moments.

R.A: What is your day to day basis being a fashion designer?

J.D: I’m a very “normal” person. I love hanging out with friends and family. When I’m back in Dominican Republic, I would spend most of my time working, presenting my work to Paris, New York and even Singapore. I’m always in a creative mood, thinking about my next collection.

R.A: Speaking about your next collection, what could we expect to see?

J.D: This year, I’m greatly inspired by androgyny, samurai at war and also my African roots with a Parisian chic touch. I will be using colors for the very first time in many years but still keeping cuts and dark tones, lots of suits, my signature drape dresses and of course lots of skin showing. I will debuting my very own shoe designs as well.

R.A: Which fashion designer do you look up to?

J.D: No doubt the late Alexander Lee McQueen, an inspiration from the very beginning of my designing career.

R.A: Growing up, who do you admire and how have that person inspire you?

J.D: I used to help my father, Micheline Thomas, in his mechanic garage as a child, getting dirty and greasy. Working with interestingly shaped car parts gave me inspiration, I believe very much evident in my work. Not to forget painter, Kehinde Willy.

R.A: Which individual, living or passes-on, would you want to see wearing your creations?

J.D: Grace Jones, Omahyra Mota and of course Lady Gaga.

R.A: We know you recently worked with model, Andrej Pejic, how is he in person?

J.D: I loved Andrej since the first time I saw him during Paris Fashion Week. I was so amused by the looks on the crowds faces, confused by his gender. He is a great person and young person, very professional on set.

R.A: In your own words, what could be missing in the fashion industry?

J.D: We are lack of real people, real artist and diversity.

R.A: Have you ever had a weird inspiration?

J.D: A couple of years ago, I did a show inspired by women who suffer from breast cancer and those who had lost parts of their body. I wouldn’t call it weird but more towards interesting.

R.A: Lastly, if you have the last ball of thread in the world. what would you make out of it and why?

J.D: JeJe interesting question. I would probably make a long scarf. I love wrapping myself up in fabric, it makes me feel so free.
