Sheridan Ward is a fashion and editorial session hairstylist. A familiar face backstage working for runway shows in London, New York, Milan and Paris as well as many fashion editorials for various magazines.

Born and raised in London he’s inspired by the vibrancy of the city and the endless amount of creative talent the fashion capital has to offer and finds inspiration in everything he does.

Sheridan has worked with countless celebrities and models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cyndi Crawford, Helena Christensen, Elle Mcpherson etc. just to name a few.

Runway Addict’s Writer, Hanz Moniefiero, managed to get an exclusive interview and behind the scenes photos with Sheridan Ward… …

(Hitchcock inspired shoot, London)

Hanz/Runway-Addict: Is hair styling something you’ve always wanted to do? If not how did you fall into it?

Sheridan: No not at all! I’d been cutting hair for 5 years before I actually took the plunge to do a course and even when I did, it was more as a hobby.  I lived in Tokyo for a year a few years ago and I was so inspired by the Japanese people, they’re so creative and always looking for next best thing… it was hard not to be inspired! When I moved back to London I quit my old job as swimming coach and personal trainer and the rest is history.

R.A: If you weren’t a stylist what would be your 2nd choice in terms of a career?

Sheridan: I’d be a fashion designer, as I love fashion and would definitely do Mens wear. Women have so much choice but men I still feel are a bit neglected, but we are getting there.. slowly!

R.A:  How does hair play a part in fashion and daily life?

Sheridan: For a show or a shoot it can be the icing on the cake helping a designer to showcase his/her latest collection for an editorial or on the catwalk. Day to day it could be a great cut or colour that gives you back your confidence and makes you feel and look good everytime you look in the mirror. If you’ve ever had a bad hair day you can feel awful and just want to hide away, but when your hair looks good you feel great.

R.A: What’s your favourite thing about hairstyling? And what’s the worst?

Sheridan: I love meeting new people, learning all the time and the travelling, all while doing the job I love. The worst is probably the travel and sometimes very long hours on your feet.  It can be exhausting but it’s worth it.

(Florence from ‘Florence and The Machines)

R.A: Be able to work with so many celebrities and models, who do you admire the most?

Sheridan: I’m a huge fan of Angela Lindvall. I’ve worked with her a couple of times and she’s fabulous. She’s super nice, beautiful and very down to earth and she manages to have an amazing modeling career and raise a family all at the same time.

R.A:  Have you ever had a hard time deciding whether or not to take a job? Especially when you have to fly across the world.

Sheridan: Not really.. It’s nearly always a Yes. Although, there was one time where I had decided to take a job and it clashed with the date of my brother’s wedding.. so I had to fly back in to do my sister in laws hair and literally flew back out afterwards. I was exhausted but it was worth it.

R.A: What are the differences from past, present and future hair-styling?

Sheridan: I don’t know about the future, maybe it’ll be like the matrix and we all be able to change our style at the push of a button(laughs), but the past definitely has an influence on styling. Retro hair is back and bigger then ever. We still use techniques from the 40’50’60’s today to help create new and interesting style with a modern twist

(Vogue inspired shoot, London)

R.A: There are many hair-stylists out there looking to get into the industry. What sort of outlook would you need to work as a freelance hair stylist?

Sheridan: The hair industry is booming and it’s still one of the few industries to be truly affected by the credit crunch. Being positive, friendly, sociable and being able to work under pressure is important.. as well as being flexible and being able to drop everything for a job when the call comes in.

(DEW Magazine Pre-July 2011)

R.A: Words of wisdom would you give our readers?

Sheridan: Taking your work seriously is imperative. Taking yourself too seriously, is destructive. So be Yourself, be prepared… and most importantly Enjoy it!

R.A: Using the alphabets ‘R’ and ‘A’, describe yourself or anything else.

Sheridan: Romantic and Ambitious =)
